CROSSFIT OPEN WORKOUT 18.2 PREDICTIONS

The OPEX Coaches and staff weigh in on 18.2

We are now entering the second week of the 2018 CrossFit Open. Hopefully everyone managed to pace 18.1 appropriately rather than ‘fly and die’ like we witnessed scores of novice CrossFit athletes doing around the world.

Our very own Tennil Reed, the Fittest Woman in America, managed to finish in 18th place worldwide with a score of 410. Also, fun fact: did you know that Tennil was invited to compete in the live announcement of 18.1? She was! But she and her Coach Mike Lee decided against it. It would have taxed her system to much to fly all the way down to Brazil.

But what comes next in the 2018 CrossFit Open lineup of workouts?

Here’s the few things we do know.

The live announcement will take place in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania at 5:00 P.M. PST. The two men competing will be Patrick Vellner and Noah Olson. This is a very competitive line up, both men were within four points of each other at the 2017 CrossFit Games. Patrick took 3rd overall and Noah took 4th.

Now let’s look at the man in charge of it all. Dave Castro. Here’s the latest ‘hint’ he dropped on his instagram.

Okay, so that it completely useless. If you can make sense of whatever the hell that means (no pun intended) you are either exceptionally brilliant or insane.

We thought we’d ask some of our professional coaches what they think 18.2 might be with the limited information we have. Take everything the say or predict with a reasonable grain of salt.

OPEX Coach Matt Springer

The leaderboard will have a balancing effect after week 2. Since the good people at CF HQ only draw with three different colored crayons, it has to be classified as ‘short and heavy’. My prediction is to see deadlifts and box jumps return with a repeat of 13.4. Recall this struck the magical combination of ascending weight & ascending repetitions on the barbell…

OPEX Coach Michael McElroy

18.1 was a low skill and high breathing rate workout. If logic and patterns hold 18.2 should be a high skill and heavy load workout. I think 18.2 will be:

8 min AMRAP
9-7-5
Muscle Ups
Squat Snatch, 185/125#

OPEX Coach Sam Smith

My workout choice is based on my breakfast this morning: spicy, enjoyable, and long in duration. In all seriousness, it’s quite impossible to predict these workouts. There’s no pattern or logic to follow. All we can do is what and see. That’s being said I think 18.2 will be:

12 min AMRAP:
3,6,9,12,15, etc.
DL @ 155/225
50,50,50,50,50,etc.
DU’s
50′,50′,50′,50′,50′,etc.
HS Walk (25′ turnarounds)

OPEX Coach Matt Connolly

There will be High(er) load and high(er) skill in week two. New movement of HS walk is ‘outside the box’ as Castro put it in his teaser videos. The walking lunges and movement across distance opened the doors for this to be included in 2018.

10min AMRAP
10 deadlifts (135lbs men/95lb women)
50′ HS Walk
15 deadlifts (185lbs/135lbs)
50′ HS Walk
20 deadlifts (225lbs/155lbs)
50′ HS Walk
25 deadlifts (275/185lbs)
50′ HS Walk
30 deadlifts (315lbs/205lbs)
50′ HS Walk
35 deadlifts (365lbs/225lbs)
50′ HS Walk

Director of Coaching Mike Lee

The nature of the CrossFit competition is that it is completely unpredictable. 18.2 may well be another hinge and upper push type workout. However, it does become easier to predict subsequent weeks as movements are eliminated from the CrossFit Open, they very rarely do the same movement twice. This week will be a higher skill workout with a much shorter time domain I think 18.2 will be:

Ascending DL/HSPU
9 min amrap:
3,6,9,12,15 etc
DL – 275/205#
Kipping hspu

OPEX Coach Mizar Fuentes-Ortega

I believe it will be a barbell ladder involving either the clean or snatch followed with some high volume gymnastics given the two athletes that will be in the live announcement.

Well there you have it. The general consensus seems to be that the workout will involve skill based movements and heavy loads in a very short intense workout.
