MASTERING FITNESS COACHING: PART 3 - HOW DO I AVOID BURNOUT AS A FITNESS COACH?

It’s a sad statistic that 80% of personal trainers leave the industry in under 2 years of getting their start in fitness.

Apart from the challenges of not making enough money and not having the flexibility to take paid time off (last week, we sent you an email on why this doesn’t have to be the case!), another major reason coaches hit a wall and burn out is because they’re trying to do it all!

If you’ve been a fitness coach for any length of time, you know it’s a balancing act—trying to develop your coaching skills, manage your clients, and grow your business all at the same time. In fact, as a professional coach there are three personas that you’ll have to embody:

  • The Artist: This is the actual coaching part, where you develop relationships with and create exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle programs for your clients. To get results and retain clients you have to be an artist of the coaching craft.

  • The Manager: This is all about managing either your time, your book of clients, or maybe eventually other coaches.

  • The Entrepreneur: This is the business side, which requires you to make smart decisions and take a visionary role in your business.

But just like it’s impossible to maximize all energy systems at one time, you have to know how to prioritize different areas of your coaching growth too. Rather than trying to do it all at once, let’s take a look at which persona you need to prioritize at each stage of your coaching journey.

THE SIX STAGES OF YOUR FITNESS CAREER

WHICH STAGE ARE YOU IN?

Once you’ve identified the most important persona for your coaching stage, as well as where you might be weak, you can begin to focus your education on where it matters most. This focus can help remove the overwhelm and allow you to gain direction in your career development.

In the OPEX Coaching Certificate Program (CCP), we provide education and mentorship for coaches at all stages of their journey, whether you need to develop as an Artist, Manager, or Entrepreneur. We know that more knowledge isn’t enough—you also need systems and practical experience so you can make money doing what you love.
