Understanding the Masculine and Feminine Communication Styles

Have you ever noticed how all clients communicate differently? Communication styles vary but, the two most common are masculine and feminine. These styles are not bound by gender and are not black and white, a client can use one or the other or a mixture of both. In order to communicate with all types of clients, a coach must understand the difference between the two, how to spot it, and how to adapt to each style.

Masculine Communication Style

The masculine communication style is goal oriented and because of this client with this style do not focus on the journey to the goal. This stems from our history of being hunters and gatherers where men were focused only on making the kill and bringing home food. To recognize the masculine communication style a coach should look for a client that is goal oriented. There are more traits that define a masculine communicator but this is a common tell. Feminine Communication Style

This style is relationship and fulfillment oriented, these communicators tend to lose sight of the end goal. The relationship and fulfillment orientation are derived from taking care of the community, historically. A coach can recognize these communicators as they will be more focused on the experience and the journey than the end goal itself. Understanding the masculine and feminine communication style is another tool coaches can add to their toolkit. The art of communication is complex but, it is a coaches job to master it, to be succinct, and communicate their message as clearly as possible.
