OPEX Sponsored Athlete Austin getting some sun

Sponsored Athlete Stories: Austin O’Neal

“I like to see how far I can take it.”

– Austin O’Neal

Perhaps one of Austin O’Neal’s most cherished memory of childhood is playing checkers with his grandfather. Often these matches would extend well past one match when one bested the other. While Austin may not have realized it at the time, these constant rematches bred within Austin the grit and persistence required of an athletic champion.

This persistence to obtain victory, no matter the amount of attempts required, was indirectly instilled in him from a very young age. This work ethic extended itself into a variety of sports as a youth, including track and field , wrestling, and football .

It was during college that he was first exposed to CrossFit through his football coach and sports mentors. At first, he utilized a CrossFit training regimen during the college summers to stay in shape for the upcoming football and wrestling seasons. However as time went on, he soon found himself attracted to the element of competition that was just beginning to flourish within the CrossFit community.

More specifically, he fell in love with the process involved with training in preparation for competition. Working out and following his programming has become meditative and relaxing to him, despite how intense many of his sessions have become.

“The sport is not about how tough you are anymore, it’s about efficiency”

– Austin O’Neal

To remain competitive in the evolving competition of CrossFit, he sought the guidance of OPEX Fitness Head Coach, Mike Lee. With Mike’s help, Austin’s training and lifestyle were enhanced and optimized for one goal, reaching the CrossFit Games.

Austin has managed to reach the qualifying competition to get to the CrossFit Games twice. In 2016, he placed 32nd out of 40 competitors in the Central Regional. In 2017, he placed 23rd. A clear improvement, but not good enough to make it to the CrossFit Games.

“There’s nothing I’ve ever wanted more than this. When I set my mind on something, I’m not going to stop until I achieve it.”

– Austin O’Neal

Sensing the need to take his training to the next level, Austin didn’t think twice when Mike Lee offered him a paid sponsorship to train onsite with him and OPEX Fitness founder James FitzGerald at OPEX HQ in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Having been a remote client of Mike Lee for three years, Austin believes that the small cues and tips he will pick-up from both legendary coaches will give him the edge needed to make it to the 2018 CrossFit Games.

Austin O’Neal has an insatiable and fanatical desire to podium at the 2018 CrossFit Games, and he will take any measure necessary to see that goal come to fruition. He is the embodiment of a champion.
